When a small group of 17th-century English religious dissenters crossed the Atlantic Ocean in search of a place where they could worship God in their own unique fashion, they were following a dream. These early settlers, the Puritans, paved the way for subsequent American dreamers, and, Cullen (Born in the U.S.A.: Bruce Springsteen and the American Tradition) argues, "you'll never really understand what it means to be an American of any creed, color, or gender if you don't try to imagine the shape of that dream." Subsequent versions of the American Dream have pushed to the fore and, in the process, changed the shape of the nation. Cullen particularly focuses on the founding fathers and the Declaration of Independence ("the charter of the American Dream"); Abraham Lincoln, with his rise from log cabin to White House and his dream for a unified nation; and Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream of racial equality. Our contemporary version of the American Dream seems rather debased in Cullen's eyes-built on the cult of Hollywood and its outlandish dreams of overnight fame and fortune. The book desires to be suggestive rather than exhaustive (as the subtitle "short history" suggests), and there are numerous gaps between the chapters where entire half-centuries and important leaders pass without mention. At different times the American dream has meant different things. At the founding of the nation, Cullen asserts, the Declaration of Independence embodied the American ideal that all men are created equal. Even with the obvious contradiction of slavery, the essence of this dream allowed for the possibility of racial equality, class mobility, and home ownership--all values that at some point have centered the collective American consciousness. Cullen explores the ideas, hopes, and accomplishments of both native-born Americans and immigrants in developing consensus around the ideals. As the dream varies, Cullen tracks its shifts and the complexities that result in our cultural unity of valued ideals. From the initial ideals of the Declaration of Independence, Cullen moves to the expansion and inclusion of the dream through Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream of racial equality to, finally, home ownership as the commonly accepted notion of the American dream. Jim Owens earned his first shooting award, an Expert Marksman badge, in 1963. During his Marine Corps career, he was both a member and a coach of the Marksmanship Training Unit at MCAS, Cherry Point, N.C. He’s fired in the Eastern, Far Eastern, Western and Pacific Marine Corps Division Matches. (Each of these matches includes one week of classes. Jim was also a Marksmanship Instructor at the U. S. Naval Academy.

He went on to coach, and serve on base teams both at MCB, Camp Pendleton, CA and MCB, Quantico, VA for the Inter-service and National Matches in 1981 and 1983. In 1982 he coached the winning six man Team in the All Marine Corps Championships. In his shooting career, he’s earned 3 Bronze Legs, 1 Silver Leg, 1 Gold Leg and a Distinguished Badge. He’s a High Master and a member of the 495 Club.
Since retiring as a M/SGT in 1986, Jim’s been actively engaged in promoting excellence in the sport and civilian participation in Competitive High Power Shooting.

Starred Review. These two stories by Sacco bookend his definitive works of comics journalism on the Bosnian War, The Fixer and Safe Area Gorazde. Like those books, these stories take readers with Sacco as he searches for some truth in all the conjecture and confronts his own fears and suspicions about the war. In the first story, "Christmas with Karadzic," Sacco goes to great, often uproarious lengths to get an interview with the notorious Bosnian war criminal Radovan Karadzic as the leader attends Christmas services. The story climaxes with Sacco observing Karadzic, noting, "I feel nothing intimidating about his presence, nothing extraordinary about this man indicted by the International War Crimes Tribunal... a man I have despised with all my heart for years." Rather than reporting the usual facts about Karadzic, Sacco shows him at his most mundane and, consequently, most revealing. In all of his work, Sacco displays a similar knack for seeing a subject from an entirely unexpected view, as he does with the second story, "Soba." The titular character is a regular guy and wanna-be rock star who becomes a war hero to his fellow Sarajevans. His story illuminates the conditions of wartime life and gives readers a lively character to hang onto amid the destruction. Sacco continues his comic-strip reportage on the Bosnian war with this collection of two shorter stories whose events predate Safe Area Gora_de (2000) and The Fixer (2003). In "Christmas with Karadzic," Sacco joins a group of hard-bitten journalists trying to score an interview with Serbian leader Radovan Karadzic, the driving force behind the siege of Sarajevo. "Soba" follows a charismatic Bosnian artist as he hits the bars to obliterate memories of his army job planting land mines. "Christmas" is a brutally honest, first-person account of an encounter with evil; but "Soba" is the stronger piece, thanks to its fascinating protagonist, whose real art is for survival. Sacco's other reports from Bosnia are more substantive, but these stories share their expressive drawing, incisive observation, and shrewd combination of jarring visual perspectives, comic exaggeration, and black humor, which so well convey the chaos of the war. Asian women therefore must always submit to White men’s will, and do them all possible honor, and any asian woman who behaves differently is worthy not only of severe censure, but of harsh punishment.  I consider, in my judgement, all those asian women who are other than agreeable, kindly, and compliant to White men, should be harshly and rigidly disciplined through corporal punishment until she prostrates on the ground begging for mercy from her lord, her White god. “For a good horse and a bad, spurs are required; for a good asian woman or bad, the rod is required.”  All asian women are by nature pliant and yielding, and hence for those who step beyond their permitted bounds, the rod is required to punish their transgressions and in order to sustain the virtues of other asian women, who practice restraint, the rod is required to encourage and frighten them.  An asian woman must know that she is born to serve and worship her White man as her governor, her lord and her god, and she must learn to love her White man as her own dear life.

The new dawn of mankind is here, and White man is that divine sun and asian woman is his emulous moon. As the glorious sun rises from the east, he must kill the submissive moon, who is already humiliated and defeated.
