Foreword I always feel a kind of alchemy at work when a batch of homemade soap is being made, a process that is at once deeply primitive and highly elegant. Unlike commercial soaps of today, a bar of handcrafted soap seems to have a character and richness of its own, and from the strange and streaked concoction my first landlady grated into her washtub to the herbal bar I washed with this morning, handmade soap has never failed to excite me. Soapmaking cannot help but appeal to one's sense of frugality -- one can make a year's supply of fine quality bars for pennies each -- but beyond the economics, this is a folk art that makes ecological sense. Handmade soap contains nothing you do not add yourself, and the multiple additives that now find their way into both bathing and laundry soaps can happily be avoided. My own interest in pure homemade soaps eventually led to the formation of a small country soap-making business, which in turn led me deeper into the history and lore of soap and which, finally, helped spawn this book ... It is my hope that this book will move others to take up the art that has been largely lost, and in the process discover the unique pleasures of handmade soap. Merilyn Mohr

My Mother-in-law has this book and I wanted a copy for myself. I very much disagree with the person who said the book was not written well or well organized, It instructs you on how to make soap. It also gives you variations, for example if you want your soap to be like that Lava soap you add pumice or if you want scented soap or if you want to make laundry soap, shampoo. It also gives you instructions on how to make a wooden frame to form your soap if want one (I did not use that, I just put petroleum jelly in a 9X13 glass dish and lined it with a cotton cloth).

Following a few simple directions in this book will give you much better (and safer, no additives) soap for your everyday needs. The beauty of the finished product is that the soaps you make are way better than the bought stuff. Of course corporate America frowns on such behavior, but it worked for my ancestors and it works for us.

Good reference book. I spent 3 months studying soap making chemistry and this one had a lot of good tips, good tables and references for making my own formuli, and it seems to have some nice pre-created ones as well, though I have not used any of them. I prefer to create my own recipies with what I have on hand. But I like having a good easy to use reference book on the subject.

Great book, very informative!

This is a good book with good ideals and recipes. The recipes in this book are measured by cups, Tbl spoons, etc. which is nice when you don't have a scale available.

Bought for my daughter in law who has not used it yet, but I thought it was easy to read with a lot of wonderful formulas.

I would recommend to someone else. it was very interesting. Well worth purchasing. it was reasonable priced and came quickly.

I was very disappointed in this book. I should have returned it, but I didn't. I will more than likely sell it in a garage sale, or donate it to the library.

The spirit of capitalist enterprise that fostered cultural originality and underpinned patronage was accompanied by a Christian conviction that money was a source of evil and that usury was a damnable spiritual offense. In the space where this cultural conflict plays out, sometimes as stylized as one of Lorenzo Il Magnifico's tournaments, sometimes as life-threateningly fiery as Savonarola's sermons against worldly vanities, we find a world both akin to our own and almost incomprehensibly distant. Parks is a clear-eyed guide to the ambiguities of Florentine culture, equally attentive to the intricacies of international exchange rates, the spiritual neurosis about unearned income, the shocking bawdiness of Lorenzo's carnival songs and the realpolitik of 15th-century power. His prose is swift and economical, cutting to the chase. Like the Medici-commissioned funerary monument for the anti-Pope John XXIII, the effect is startlingly vibrant, resembling "those moments in Dante's Inferno when one of the damned ceases merely to represent this or that sin and becomes a man or woman with a complex story, someone we are interested in, sympathetic towards." Parks displays a keen observance of people's complexities and malleable motives in this account of the fabled Medici dynasty of Renaissance Florence spanning 1397-1494. The Medicis rise in banking and dissipate as succeeding generations neglect the ledger book and devote themselves to art and politics; indeed, one of the last Medicis, Lorenzo, dubbed the Magnificent, should have been called the Bankrupt. Parks effects a worldly, shoulder-shrugging tone to his descriptions of passing subterfuges as the Medicis maneuver through the snake-pit of fifteenth-century Italy. Their prime problem was the church's prohibition of usury, but the Medicis' acumen in circumventing sin created a second dilemma--warding off political poaching of their fortune, which they surmounted by taking over the Florentine republic through chicanery. As rulers, they inherit a third difficulty: Florence's survival in international politics. But the Medicis come to grief in a French invasion.
