I really like this book. I love that it tells me step-by-step what to do next. The author really took the time to explain every step and that's what I need. I've already completed my first drawing and I just got it yesterday. Can't wait to do more! :) Also, I didn't really read to see if it explains in the product description page on Amazon which pencils she uses, but she uses a hard lead type, a soft lead type and a medium clay-based lead type. I only have the Prismacolor Premier set, so I just used similar colors (the author took the time to list the names of each color used, along with a sample of the color). I did enjoy myself enough to go ahead and order a set of Verithins for my next project.

The title is misleading this does not teach you to draw bird but color them, one drawing example of one bird in the whole book, very disappointed, gave it 2 stars because the images are good and some of the instruction is good but it doesn't do me any good without the basic drawing lesson much needed, my opinion is to much written instruction and seriously lacking visual instruction on drawing but decent instruction on coloring, i will include some pics so you decide for yourself seeing how they lack any look inside, showing pics of a whole lesson on one bird, last pic is actually page 1 then pic 1 pic 2 pic 3 not even an outline to get started I'm very dissapointed in this book if you need help with colors may be good for you but if your looking to learn to draw a bird this is not the one for you

This is a lovely book. More about pencil technique than about birds. There are a few pages at the beginning about bird anatomy and eyes, etc. but it is mostly about how to use colored pencils and all of the examples for the exercises are birds. The bird drawings are all beautiful and realistic and I cant wait to draw all of them. One thing I really like is that the author not only tells you where to use a certain stroke but she tells you the effect you will get - the why. For example page 74: " Add small, very light patches of Umber (medium lead type) randomly on the chest to indicate fluffiness" then there is an arrow on that part of the picture example that corresponds "indicate fluffiness". You will learn so much by following her directions!! I see why other reviewers have said their colored pencil skills improved after using this book. This is an excellent book and there is much more in it than my one example. This one is a winner.

I bought this book actually to use for watercolor. However the examples are so pretty and the technique very clearly shown that it made me think about giving colored pencils a try. It's really a very nice book to look through and helpful if you are wanting to expand your nature drawings to include birds.

Kaaren's book has wonderful instructions on drawing birds with colored pencils. I struggled with form and also color saturation. After following this book, my drawing of birds has improved so much! My drawings from her book look nearly identical. Her layering effect with colors makes all the difference in the color saturation. I highly recommend this book if you are interested in drawing birds (or anything) with colored pencils. She breaks down each drawing with what colors she uses at each stage, until it is finished. She also goes into the different pencile strokes she uses to create different effects. You won't be disappointed if you buy this book!

I have many books about drawing, watercolor and colored pencil in my library. This is without a doubt, hands down, the best book in my art-related library about the use of colored pencils! The author is thorough, yet accessible in her methodology and general background and enormously helpful in her book full of step by step illustrations. Each drawing has a sketch and illustrations of several steps toward a finished drawing, including a detailed color guide for each drawing. This is particularly helpful, whether you choose to use Prismacolor or Faber-Castell Polychromos colored pencils. I am delighted with the purchase!

I just received Drawing Bitds with Colored Pencils by Karen Poole. I am delighted with it. There are beautiful examples of many different birds. I love the tips she gives for the various birds, the list of supplies, and the directions for each of the birds. I have been working with Colored Pencils for about 10 months. I believe that I will learn a great deal from this author and I believe that I will have a great time doing it.

Great book, very detailed, step by step illustrated instructions. There are a lot of useful tips throughout the book as well. I'm a beginner, I've worked with watercolor pencils but have never done anything with just colored pencils. The drawings are intricate, and definitely more for an "artist" . Not a book for beginners. You need to be able to draw really well .

Kevin Greene is Reader in Archaeology at the University of Newcastle. He has extensive teaching experience at undergraduate and continuing education levels. He has also published many books and articles on his research into Roman ceramics, economics and technology.

This is a gorgeous cookbook with many beautiful pictures throughout. I'd say about half of the recipes have an accompanying picture. The book measures about 12 inches tall, so it may not fit on all book shelves. The book includes a primer on spices, tips on putting together an Indian meal, sample menus, wine pairing advice, and an introduction to cooking techniques unique to the Indian kitchen, as well as the cookware and tools you will need. The index is organized by both the original name of the dish, as well as the English translation. You can also look up dishes by ingredients, and not just main ingredients like dried legumes, but also by spices and other secondary ingredients.So far, I have tried several dishes and they've ranged from OK to good, but have lacked that wow-factor. I have felt like most of the recipes have needed some sort of adjustments made to them. For example..Mango Lassi - I added less yogurt than called for and still felt that the fruit flavor was not very prominent. I will add significantly less next time.Everyday Dal - As other reviewers have mentioned, be wary of the amount of chilies called for. For example, in this recipe, three different kinds of chilies are called for: 2 dried red chili peppers, 2 fresh green chili peppers, and a teaspoon of Asian chili powder or cayenne pepper. I understand that each of the these is going to lend a slightly different flavor and type of heat to the dish, but unless you have quite the tolerance for heat, you're probably going to want to tinker with these amounts. Just for reference, I added one large jalapeno and a small dash of cayenne, and that was pleasantly spicy for me and my family.Black-Eyed Peas and Rice - I felt like the rice turned out somewhat sticky/mushy. I'm not sure if this is due to the amount of water called for, the cook time, or some other factor.Basmati Rice with Whole Spices - Same issue with the rice here. Also, I felt like 1 teaspoon of cloves was too much and needed to be reduced.Overall, it's a really beautiful book and a great primer on Indian cooking, but I'm still on the lookout for an Indian cookbook with recipes that will work the first time and that I'm inspired to make again.

Love this book ! I got it after it was recommended in one of my trustworthy blogs. The recipes are easy to follow, even for a novice cook, the instructions are step by step, easy to follow and foolproof. Being an Indian, i cook Indian food almost 3 times a day and this book easily fits in my regular routine to whip up something different but still authentic.I followed many a recipes exactly and got amazing results, Kerala Beef fry ( i made it with Lamb) , the Kadai paneer, pepper chicken & Shrimp Briyani to name a few. An Indian book im glad i got.My only complain, is that the Kindle version is not formatted to look that pretty compared to the book. The bright colorful pictures are like thumbnails and one recipe is jammed up, " The chicken tikka masala' with the previous one. Would have preferred to get the book instead.

My husband is British and is very familiar with Indian cuisine. I am American and before meeting him, I had tried it once in my 52 years! But I became a lover of this exotic flavorful cuisine with his introduction to the different favorites he grew up with. So this cook book was my first attempt at cooking anything Indian! My first suggestion....get the spices. Indian food is full of amazing spices we as Americans rarely utilize. Coriander, turmeric, Garam Masala, fresh ginger and LOADS of garlic to name a few. Get a starter kit (these are wonderful, economical and I recommend 'SpiceKits' here on Amazon). This will really help you just to dive right in. Also, be sure to have a food processor. If you have every worked with fresh ginger, then you know it is very fibrous and difficult to 'mince' or...frankly...do anything with. And you will be mincing plenty of garlic...so save some time and have a food processor on hand!I love the book. It has some wonderful recipes and all of my husbands favs are there. I want to stress however, that the author created these recipes based on authentic Indian tastes! If you are not into spicy (and most Brits like their curry mild), then you will need to augment almost every single recipe to omit the red pepper (Asian red pepper).The book has lots of extras such as where to purchase spices, and he gives lots of substitution options: ie: fish instead of chicken. I have now cooked many of the entree's in the book and my husband is over the moon with the results. I have yet to have any of the recipes come out in the time frame listed. I cannot brown an entire cut up raw chicken in 4 minutes for example. So many of these recipes do not give realistic completion times. As with any cooking style, it takes time to make it 'your own' and I am not quite there yet. But I do love this book and the gorgeous images provided of this wonderful cuisine that you will give you a much broader knowledge of the use of exotic spices and a whole new palette of flavors!
