Information in this book is really good, in this audiobook. But as audiobooks go this is incredibly boring to listen to. You're literally listening to someone read off of paper. He reads fast. His examples are unmemorable. And. He gives one quick example for each point and then quickly moves onto the next point. Again the information is really good but it's incredibly hard to focus on an audiobook that is mother told, quickly read, with poor samples and no stories to highlight The points he's trying to make.

This book outlines some really good techniques for telling for a person is lying, withholding information or determining a persons true level of interest. It goes beyond mere body language and in fact doesn't even cover those theories.It describes specific scenarios and explains the way you can apply these techniques. If you'd like to discover if a person is really interesed in a job postion for instance. You first gauge their level of confidence and then by way of testing figure out if that person has more than a minimal level of interest. If they are really interested then they will become stressed when they see their chances for getting what they want are diminished. That makes sense though of course those reactions can be imitated by someone intending to mislead.This book is good for employers or anyone who has to interact with persons whose true motivations are not easily determined. I have several books on body language and although those theories often hold true and are observable and repeatable this book is different.

I got this in audio CD. I am in traffic and I feel like he is sitting next to me and telling me this. I also own the book and have read it 5 times.

I have to admit that if this line wasn't in the book, I would have likely rated this book lower:"Does this mean you will be able to read anyone with perfect precision, every time? No. The system is not 100 percent foolproof. However, you will gain a definitive statistical advantage in every encounter."The theory mentioned in this text is sound, but without a good grasp of the context of a situation, the information here is useless. It's important to understand how someone is, the experiences that affect them, and the context of the situation (formal vs. informal for example) so that reactions can be gauged properly.Another warning about this book: Some of the examples are unclear without a conceptualization of the context, and without a firm grasp of the concept being discussed. It's not unusual to need to reread sections of the book and (to an extreme) ask questions.As far as who I would recommend this book for... Although the title of the book makes it sound ideal for everybody, it really takes both intelligence and a good character to apply the techniques properly and accurately. When I say good character, I mean someone who is good at avoiding the pitfalls of human nature, such as egotism. Keep in mind that this book is based on Psychological principles, some of which we ourselves are subject to and that can intefere with our ability to use the methods defined here effectively.

Even if you can't picture yourself in the situations he describes you walk away with an awareness of human nature; what liars say/do...etc. It's one book you'll reread and gain something every time you pick it up.Not a generic 'feel good' book but exactly how it's described. Try it.

A bit too technical for me, but for someone in business or law enforcement it would be a great book. I believe I learned many good things even if I think it's a bit over my head.

This book has some wonderful insight to it. I would consider this a quick read. The projections are good as well as the flow and techniques provided.As with any book don't expect this to be the end all be all but is great for getting your feet wet.

I enjoyed this book. Thought it had some useful tidbits, but I wouldn't say that it could be easily applied in every situation. I think you'd have to practice and know your "audience", before applying some of his logic.After reading this book, I know I've had someone apply one of these principles to me at one time. I'm a fairly open person and I wish they would've come right out and asked me instead of me "reading them" and what they were trying to get at. Of course, not everyone is as open, so these tips may help in discovering another person.

I have been trying to learn about the Hadoop/NoSQL world for the last few months, and have found myself getting really frustrated at the lack of a source which presents a clear big picture. No matter where I looked, I was just overwhelmed by minutiae, and the arguments of zillion people advocating their own favorite new technology.No more! The authors of this book present a wonderful, accessible, product-agnostic introduction to the world of NoSQL. The book first covers the four major kinds of NoSQL databases (key-value, document, column family and graph) via a highly practitioner-oriented comparative study. It then goes into various scalability issues and trade-offs, including distribution models, CAP theorem and its implications, an introduction to Map-reduce and so on. This book has demystified much of NoSQL for me and made it seem quite common-sensical.If you are new to the Hadoop-NoSQL world, this is the book to start with before delving into any specific technology or jargon. I think that after this high-level introduction, a deep-dive using a book like 'Seven Databases in Seven Weeks' is a logical next step.

The authors state in the preface that the aim of this book is to give one enough information on whether NoSQL technology makes sense for a given project and if so which tool to explore in more depth. After reading through the book from cover to cover, I think the authors have achieved their goal. The first part of the book is about understanding NoSQL while the second is devoted to implementation. This book is very well written and it's quite an engaging read. Different data distribution models, consistency, transactions are all covered in significant detail in the first half of the book which is a major value add - anyone who has worked in an enterprise application environment can easily relate to the problems and proposed solutions as well as limitations of each. The second half typically focuses on one particular implementation in a given category of NoSQL and shares more detail on how to interact with it as well as when it is (and when it is not) appropriate to use a tool. The chapter on polyglot persistence shows some of the ways in which an organization can leverage multiple tools effectively at the increased cost of complexity, deployment and maintenance. Even though this book is about NoSQL, the authors include a chapter on Beyond NoSQL where file systems, event sourcing and other alternatives are discussed. The book closes out on selecting the tool for a given project by giving some ideas on how to do this while recognizing the immature nature of NoSQL field. This book is a great starting point for anyone with no background in NoSQL. For those who have some experience with NoSQL, the main value addition would be that the information as well as ideas on NoSQL are summarized in a single place.

If you need an exhaustive reference, detailed information, or an in-depth example of setting up an application with NoSQL, this is NOT the book for you. If you need a quick readme on NoSQL in general to get up to speed for a project, this book will be a good resource. It contains all the essential information and is a short, quick read.

This is, to my surprise, a really solid little book. TLDR; it covers what you need and introduces a mix of formal and common-usage terminology to help you ask the right questions to do something with the information. Highly recommended.Technology books are the bane of my existence - they're expensive, riddled with inconsistent quality of information, and usually out of date before they even reach print. This book is one of those rare exceptions. It clearly shows both academic integrity and has all the right hallmarks of practical usage and experience - and in around 150 pages gets you up to speed, an amazing feat of selective focus for a topic as potentially broad as this. As with quite a few of the Martin Fowler books, it reflects awareness of the industry and history of the technologies at play - useful for getting a flavor for why things are as they are - and Pramod Sadalage has done a good job putting this across.The material builds very quickly from general discussion (what is NoSQL, and what is it not) into defining a set of criteria you can apply (as an architect, technologist, or developer) to understand what might work for your projects and how to begin assessing the cost/benefit/risk associated. The rest of the book is dedicated to providing insight into the behavioral models and key concepts for taking advantage of each of the "NoSQL" options discussed - including where you might want to stick with good old relational database persistence.If you haven't played with NoSQL, are curious about it, or are hitting scalability issues with your database projects, this book provides a wealth of insight and ways to help get you up to speed with the ideas driving the movement. Don't expect to get a tour through the particular implementations of these databases - but from my reading this is more helpful than a hindrance.

This is a fun book that provides ample inspiration and ideas to reorganize and redecorate your home or office. I use this book and gave copies to my kids. If you need a quick jump-start when your surroundings are ho-hum or cluttered, this is the best book to read to get unstuck. Don't trust the library to have it when you need it on a gotta-clean-this-messy-apartment kind of day; get your own copy. You'll refer to it often and, if it works for you as it has for my friends and family, it'll pay for itself in one use.

This book quite literally changed my life. It's the perfect book to read if you feel like things just haven't been going your way in any and all aspects of your life. I find myself pulling this book out every few months when my life feels unbalanced and it always finds a way to put me back on track. This has been my go-to fengshui book for years!

This book is entertaining, it represents a very westernized understanding about Feng Shui. It is more to advocate positive thinking than explaining how Feng Shui works. You will see a lot of "write down what you really want and put it in the respective corner in the house", or "put stuff with this color and this shape in this corner of the house". If this helps people to think & live more positively - that's fine. I've read several books about Feng Shui from some American authors (like this one) and also from other well-known feng shui masters in Asia and books by Asian authors make much more sense. If you want to really understand what Feng Shui is, or to seriously pursue this topic, I highly recommend to check out books by feng shui masters from Malaysia or Taiwan, Hong Kong. There are 2-3 very well known, not all of them write English books probably because they are very busy doing the actual work, but the few books that I've read were really good.

Very easy to read and practical guide to Feng Shui. My sister got this book from a friend and she shared it with me and I found it was very straightforward easy to follow . I like that she has a intuitive approach giving you ideas but letting you use your own sense of decorating style to achieve balance and harmony . I've only read one other book on the subject which tended to be more complicated and too much to read, so I lost interest . So far I can't say any miracles have happened however my sister has been trying to sell her house for quite some time and since applying some of these techniques she has already had several interested parties. One thing that is really significant about this book and sets it apart is that she really dives deeper into exploring what might be holding you back.emotional baggage is usually represented by material objects , taking a look at the stuff you're holding onto and how that can be hindering you can be extremely enlightening and freeing As I went through each section of the bagua it helps you unclutter and really take a look at your space and some of the junk that we carry around with us that may or may not be affecting our mental and emotional well being and growth.The house I live in is a semi circular shaped home so I'm concentrating on the rooms that I spend the most time in like with any metaphysical practice I think it's mostly focus. focusing your intent and giving the areas of your life that need improvement attention if you're going to read one book on feng shui this is where I would start .

Is the best book on feng shui I have ever had. This is the fifth copy I have bought to give to a friend. It is written so well and the author is so entertaining and her ideas are so easy to apply to your home

For anyone who has either been just confused by the many different schools of Feng Shui, or just wants to start from scratch with an extremely practical guide, this is it.The author covers all the basics and explains WHY they work, and is also careful to point out where there are extreme situations that need professional help beyond a book.It is rare to find any book that is so clear and hands-on in any field!This book is also well suited for Westerners who may not relate to all of the traditional Feng Shui cures, and it offers many alternatives for the cures that you may already have at home or can get nearby.

The trick to this is to have fun with it. At first I thought I was going to have to spend a lot of money & re-arrange everything, but this is not the case. I did end up spending under $50, but that was my preference, not necessary. The rest I can do with colored paper. The process makes you more attentive to things you are probably neglecting, such as: health, finances and the other life areas. Color does have power and vibration and light does effect us; ever have to sit under florescent lights with no natural light? Most people do and I think it is very stressful and helps contribute to much of the workplace misery. There are tips for office management in this book, but the focus is on your home and it's not something just for the richest one percent. All of us can perform feng shui with re-cycled goods, paper, tape & fabric. You can hide many of the solutions too and keep your decor. I don't know yet if it works, but it certainly can't hurt to take the directions & suggestions. It took me 3 days to read the book and make easy household changes, and the last part of the book is ongoing affirmations to help work on positive outlook. If you are cleaning out your house and garage, you've already stepped into the process, so why not try some easy feng shui and see what happens?

I have not read this cover to cover, but changed a few things (bed to a different wall, etc) and the vibe in my apartment really has seemed to improve! Go figure! ;)

I love reading interior design and feng shui books. At first, I checked it out at the library along with about a dozen other books. As we moved houses and our family grew, I kept checking this one out over and over. Figured it was time to buy it! It's probably a bit more "Feng Shui for Dummies" but I love how easy it is to read and follow.

About the Author

John Cromby is Senior Lecturer at Loughborough University, UK. Previously, he conducted research and teaching at the Universities of Nottingham and Bradford, and he has experience of working in mental health, drug addiction, and learning disability settings. His work engages with the ways that bodies and social processes come together to produce experience, including experiences of distress. In recent years this has meant exploring topics including paranoia, clinical sadness, emotion and fear of crime, and experimenting with methods of jointly analysing textual data and embodied activity. He is a former editor of the journal Subjectivity.

David Harper is Reader in Clinical Psychology at the University of East London (UEL), UK. He trained as a clinical psychologist at the University of Liverpool and worked as a clinical psychologist in National Health Service mental health services in the north-west of the UK for nine years. For a number of years he combined work as a clinician with part-time study for a PhD at Manchester Metropolitan University. He has been at UEL since 2000 and his research interests are in applying critical psychology and social constructionist ideas to the understanding both of distress (particularly paranoia and unusual experiences and beliefs) and the work of mental health professions. He undertakes a small amount of clinical work as a Consultant Clinical Psychologist in Newham as part of the Systemic Consultation Service.

Paula Reavey is Professor of Psychology at London South Bank University, UK, where she delivers a module on the psychology of mental health and distress. She edited the volume Visual Psychologies: Using and Interpreting Images in Qualitative Research (2011) and also co-edited two volumes, New Feminist Stories of Child Sexual Abuse: Sexual Scripts and Dangerous Dialogues (with Sam Warner, 2003) and Memory Matters: Contexts for Understanding Sexual Abuse Recollections (with Janice Haaken, 2009). She is currently working on a co-authored book Vital Memory: Ethics, Affect and Agency (with Steven D. Brown, 2013) and has also published numerous articles on social remembering, child sexual abuse and sexuality, mental distress, and embodiment and space, using a variety of methodologies, including memory work, discourse analysis and visual methods.
