I've read "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" several times now (I've also taken the "Seven Habits" management course), and the book's powerful message never ceases to have a positive effect on nearly every aspect of my life.This is a book about organizational excellence, but with a key difference than most others on the same subject: Covey believes that the foundation of organizational excellence is personal excellence. The seven habits he describes in great detail are tools leading to that goal. They can be applied in nearly every situation in our lives, and, if successfully practiced, will help us to improve our lives at home, work and play. A word of caution, though: the book may not be for everybody; you have to be willing to face yourself honestly and courageously, and apply the seven habits daily, in order to become more effective.For the most part, "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" is well written. Covey tends to "sermonize" in places, and his writing style is at times long-winded and a bit patronizing (a flaw common to many writers of management books who think of theirs as the "best way"). However, despite its stylistic shortcomings, the book's message is powerful and profound...for those who have the courage to accept it and put it into practice.

I finally decided to read The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. I had purchased it some time ago and recently determined that now was the time to read this self-help classic. What a COLOSSAL disappointment! I am amazed that this mediocrity is so popular. I found it to be little more than 1980s managerial balloon juice.From “paradigm shift,” to “think Win/Win,” to (ugh) “synergy,” there is no empty self-help cliché left unturned. I should have stopped reading the first time I saw the word “synergy.” (I get countless “business proposals” in my email every day and, if I bother to skim any of them at all, I delete them as soon as the word “synergy” makes an appearance.) No word represents the trite emptiness of this book better than “synergy” – except maybe the verb form of the word: “synergize,” or the adjective “synergistic,” or the adverb “synergistically.” But they are all here. (The author also repeatedly refers to “things that are learned” as “learnings.”)The book doesn’t even try to live up to its title. There is no argument at all to support the idea that these are seven actual habits that real people have used anywhere in the world to achieve real success. In fact, these seven so-called habits appear to be nothing more than seven things that the author thinks are really good ideas, with weird examples of how they helped him deal with his kid being bad at baseball and also helped his kid learn the value of cleaning up the yard. The book’s title doesn’t match the book itself, but then no one would spend their money on a book called, “The Seven Things Some Random Guy Thinks are Really Nifty-Keen.”Here’s some useful self-help/time management advice for you: do not waste your precious time with this book. There are dozens and dozens, if not hundreds, of better self-help books out there. Synergize your win/win paradigm shifts with some of those.

I rarely if ever leave reviews on purchases, but I felt the need to share this one. I've spent the past several years trying to figure out what I was doing wrong when it came to happiness. I had every reason to be happy, but yet felt this deep hollowness inside. I've tried all the positive thinking quick fixes, meditation, law of attraction, etc. Nothing seemed to click or "cure" this aching inside. It wasn't until I read the 7 Habits Of Highly Effective People, that the fog finally lifted. This book taught me why all those quick fixes don't work and how my happiness depended on my own internal work and efforts. I encourage anyone who is struggle with a similar situation or everyone for that matter to read this book. It'll change your perspective on life!

This is, hands down, one of the best and most powerful books I've ever read in my life. I have recommended it to countless people. The fact that you're seeking it out says volumes about your level of self-awareness as it is and this book builds on that. Very seldom do books really make me get involved when I read them, but this book made me break out my highlighter and notepad. There was so much good stuff I just had to take notes I could quickly reference. You know how some books make you say things out loud? You'll read something and say, "YES! EXACTLY!" or read something profound and just sit dumbfounded, going "Wow," and you have to take a moment to reflect on it? This book is full of moments like that.There is a lot of practical stuff in here, too. Challenges for you. Ways you can start to shift your thinking by taking an emotional inventory of your life and what you're doing/feeling every day. Just writing about it makes me want to go back and read it again. If you're here looking for a book that will help you harness that little spark inside of you that's saying, "You can be better" then this book is it. You're not an animal. Life doesn't condition you like a dog. This book is about the untouchable part of your human spirit that no one besides you controls. This book is about carrying sunny weather with you where ever you go, learning how much a proactive attitude benefits you, and really how sad and wasteful it is to walk through life allowing things to ruin your day. Things don't ruin your day. YOU ruin your day. You are always in control.Seriously, read this book. You won't regret it.

Von Beltz fooled them, of course. Fifteen years later, she is able to sit and stand, has control over bodily functions, and can party with the best of them. She has even had a passionate affair with actor Ray Liotta. At 25, von Beltz, daughter of a Hollywood film family, was on her way to success as an actress and producer/director. Athletic and willing to take risks, she also took jobs as a stuntwoman. The accident that immobilized her took place in 1980 during a stunt scene for Cannonball Run; she woke up in a hospital with her head and body immobilized on a board suspended above the bed. She and her family simply refused to accept the medical prognosis. With help from a Christian Science advisor, a talented chiropractor, a retired neurosurgeon, and many others along the way, they set out to restore Heidi's body--a long, frustrating process. Von Beltz put almost as much work into keeping her social life going, starting with champagne parties in her hospital room and, later, weekend bashes at her Malibu house. I had recently read "The Developing Mind" by Dan Siegel (an excellent but slow reading book because it is crammed with interesting data). I decided I wanted a book where I could visualize what goes on in what parts of the brain. This book is it: Great pictures and comprehensive easy-to-read summaries of the functions of all parts of the brain.

This was a very readable book. I have a background in counseling and wanted to learn a bit more about neuroscience than I remembered from school, and this book for that bill. It's accessible for most adults, or at least adults with a college education, and it's helpful at offering examples of what various parts of the brain control. I recommend this for anyone who wants to have a simplified, basic understanding of the brain.

When I purchased this book, it was based in large part with my fascination on the topic of the human mind and neurology in general. I'd taken a few classes here and there in Anatomy & Physiology during my first few years in college, but by in large I was definitely a novice when I read this book and was not very familiar with the vast field of neuroscience. What I liked the most about Rita Carter's Mapping the Mind is how introduction-friendly ad visually pleasing it is for those that aren't in the field but are fascinated like I am by the human mind. You don't have to be a neurologist to enjoy how Rita Carter lays out the current research (as of 2000) on various workings and issues regarding the human mind.With the above being said, now on to the good stuff! Rita Carter and neuropsychologist Christopher Firth put on an excellent show of presenting just how our personalities are shaped by biology and how different behavioral disorders can be traced back to the individual areas of ones brain. Carter presents many fascinating topics such as obsessions, compulsions, autism , what makes serial killers/convicted felons tick, addictions, dyslexia, ADD, depression, mania, and mood swings. Furthermore, there is even a compelling article on how researchers in a Canadian institution even managed to generate religious feelings/beliefs just by stimulating a region in the brain. As others have mentioned, the most interesting articles in the book come from the numerous experts in the fields of human psychology and neuroscience and add a nice depth to the overall books presented research and information.Mapping The Mind also presents some very interesting questions on the future of human ethics and morality. For example, if some human beings can't help what they do in that they are "hard-wired" for certain types of behavior and actions, then are they truly responsible for their actions? It is a very tough question to answer but one that is intriguing to think about in the event that one day criminals could very well be exonerated by brain scans and different imaging techniques alone. As I mentioned above also, is religion merely a portion of our minds that happens to be just a simulation? If scientists can stimulate an area of a brain causing even atheists to momentarily have religious thoughts, what does that imply about our society and religion?My only qualm (and this irritated the hell out of me for some reason, lol) is that the articles that were from various experts in the field of neurology would be inserted RIGHT in the middle of what you were reading more often than not. I would be reading an interesting section of a chapter and then this article would be plastered right on the next page or even during the sentence of the section I was trying to read. I'd then have to skip over the article that was in my way and then continue my section on the next page and THEN read the inserted article. It is a minor quip to be certain but I generally like to finish the particular portion I'm reading before going on to the inserted research articles in that particular chapter. So call it 4.5 stars with half a star for poor article placement.Whether you're an expert in this field or a novice and inquiring mind like I was, I recommend you pick up a copy of this book. It's $20 well-spent in my opinion :)-Travis

_Mapping the Mind_ is a comfortable and engaging introduction into what is known so far about how the brain works. You will learn (or review) the different parts of the brain, their place in human evolution, and the role of each in the myriad of activities and abilities we all take for granted. Revealing case studies are cited of how damage to a particular part of the brain may impair the sufferer in a very specific and sometimes bizarre way. Carter poses pointed questions about human free will, and to what extent we really have such. This book is a good launchpad for further reading on the brain, e.g. by Damasio and Ramachandran. The illustrations all have a surrealistic, computer-generated look about them which doesn't entirely appeal to me, but does help unify the overall page design. Most are clear, but for some it may take a while to establish the orientation - L to R, R to L, or looking up from underneath. Actually, I would give this book four and a half stars; there are various glitches of editing, like repeated material in the same chapter, and some very minor typos and formatting quirks. And the prose takes on just a faint shade of purple here and there, in the spirit of Diane Ackerman (_A Natural History of the Senses_), though I realize this was part of Carter's effort at enhanced readability, and mostly it comes off OK. Overall, this book is a good plunge to take if you're interested in yourself and why and how you do what you do - and who isn't?

This book opens up a series of new streams of analysis for me. Over the last 1 month, I have become keenly interested in wanting to know how the human mind works. Rita Mayer's book gives a detailed overview of this landscape. The book has opened up absolutely new territory for me and I have bought 10 other books that take me in the directions of consciousness, language faculty and ethics. This is a lean-forward book. It requires the non-specialised reader's deep attention. But, for a serious book, it is unputdownable! Over the last 1 week, every day after work, I eagerly looked forward to reading it. Highly recommended as a start to the journey of understanding the Mind

I ordered this book without having seen it, intending it as a sort of casual review of current trends in neuropsycholoical knowledge and research- more for casual reading than serious study. I'd taken my last neuro course in grad school nearly 20 years ago, and thought of Carter's book more as casual reading than something for serious study.I was surprised to discover that Carter has written a book that, while an enjoyable read, is one of the best introductory text's I've ever come accross in the field. I showed it to a few academic friends who agreed that yes, this would make a fine adjunct to an introductory cource in neruopsychology or neuroanatomy. Quite an accomplishment.I would strongly recommend this book to both the casual reader with an interest in mind and anatomy, and the serious student looking towards a career in psychology, medicine or neuroanatomy.

I found this book to have some excellent recipes within. However, if you are looking for a major primer on oils or extensive information, this is NOT the book for you. This book is designed to be for someone newer to essential oils who does not want to create their own recipes or someone who has "been around the block" but wants something simple to help them learn more and try different things with a reduced risk of error.Other reviewers have complained about the choices of oils and the expense. I found her list to be fairly accurate but VERY different from her starter kit for the free online course she offers through Aromahead Institute.My recommendations to other readers: (and potential readers!)1: Read the ENTIRE BOOK and decide which formulas you wish to try. THEN purchase your oils accordingly. This will save the expense of oils you do not like, do not want to use, or do not plan on using. Start small and pick 2-3 recipes instead of the whole kit n' caboodle.2: She recommends MANY times in the book to research your oils. This book is not intended to be for that research. Know that ahead of time and be ready to invest in a good book on essential oils and other herbal remedies. Until you are able to make that investment, there are many locations online, including Aromahead Institute and reputable online companies that sell essential oils, absolutes, and hydrasols which can help you.3: This is NOT meant to be the end of your journey in essential oils. Be ready to keep studying and learning. This is the start of the path, not the final destination.4: Last but not least, please learn proper safety protocols and USE them. For your safety and the safety of those you love.

I think this is a very good book but too little information for the price. I’m aware of Andrea Butje’s well respected and well earned reputation in the aromatherapy community. I just received this book and am disappointed with how thin it is. I know it has quality information in it, I’m just very disappointed that it does not have much more quality information and recipes. If I had seen this on a bookshelf in a bookstore, I would not have purchased it.

I just got this book and read mostly through it in one evening. It's not a thick book obviously, but it is packed with great recipes using essential oils for the home and your health. The author lists a "starter kit" list of essential oils if you're unsure of what you need and all the recipes have a descriptor of what they can be used for or any cautions of use. She also includes a list of where to buy essential oils and bottling products (this may seem silly because you can search online but amazingly the 3 websites she listed for oils don't automatically come up on the Google searches I've done and I think the quality of these products are probably better than some of the other sites that Google DID provide on the first search page). There aren't a lot of details in this book about how essential oils are extracted or too much about safety other than a few general mentions here and there but it is exactly as described on the book description - a recipe book! I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a way to eliminate some chemical cleaners in your home, discover new lotion and beauty recipes, or for some simple diffusion recipes to help with cold and flu season or everyday living.

I bought the ebook for my collection of aromatherapy authors. Andrea Butje does an awesome job of creating an easy to read and easy to understand book on how to use essential oils in your home, office, traveling, and outside use. I find it an amazingly great resource and one that I use often. The author provides purchasing tips, blending techniques, and dilution standards. I love the abundance of recipes and the advise that one should start to blend beyond these recipes because it is all about the knowledge learned, application, and safety in the use of each essential oil. Branching out to discover and connect with new oils is what I have been doing. Love the book and it should be on everyone's bookshelf. Thanks to Andrea I am enjoying converting my home and daily living around the substitution of commercial cleaners to those nature developed for us.

I guess I was expecting something more than what this book is. It's okay, the recipes are okay, but you can find recipes like that on the web for free. I don't know, I thought there would be at least a description or background info about the EO's used, but sadly no. I guess the book is what it says, a recipe book and I can't be mad at that.

This is a great beginner book with lots of nice easy instructions. It was thinner book than I thought, but Andre Butje writes a well balanced easy to understand book on essential oils. I will use this often!

I don't want to be pressed with marketing for specific brands and their blends but instead want to know how individual oils work singly or in blends. This book does just that. Not only does the book cover necessary tools but basic oils to start with and a suggested list of what to acquire over time. There are several recipes in the book and they are designated as to the appropriate level of expertise needed to blend them. It's a quick read but still an excellent resource that I keep coming back to review.

This book is fantastic. Tons of great recipes authored by a truly evidence-based aromatherapist. Let this book be a gateway into the massive body of work Andrea Butje has bestowed upon the aromatherapy world. I am a student in several of her online aromatherapy training programs. She provides a sane and beautifully effective path for the science minded individual through the often misunderstood and underestimated world of aromatherapy. I have invested a lot in her training and haven't regretted a minute of it.

Stuart Shanker is a Distinguished Research Professor of Philosophy and Psychology at York University. Dr. Shanker is currently serving as Director of the Milton and Ethel Harris Research Initiative (MEHRI) at York University, a privately funded initiative whose goal is to build on new knowledge of the brain’s development, and help set children (including those with developmental disorders) on the path towards emotional and intellectual health.

 

Dr. Shanker has just been appointed the Director of EPIC: an international initiative created to promote the educational potential in children by enhancing their self-regulation. He has served as the Director of the Council of Human Development for the past ten years; Director of the Canada-Cuba Research Alliance for the past six years; and he was the first President of the Council of Early Child Development in Canada. Over the past decade he has served as an advisor on early child development to government organizations across Canada and the US and countries around the world, among them Australia, Colombia, England, Ireland, Macedonia, Madagascar, Mexico, Northern Ireland, Peru, Romania and Serbia. Most notable among these is his involvement in the creation of the new early learning program in Ontario (viz. "The Pascal Report," for which he also wrote the preface).
